CLARA MENTE
Warren, Vermont
May 2021

I was awarded a week-long residency at Tiny Birch Residency in Warren, VT, where I created this piece specifically to be mounted in the birch forest on the residency grounds. Each day, I worked outdoors, immersed in the thousand shades of Vermont’s greens. Once the piece was halfway complete and I had chosen its location, I began the final stage by hanging it between two trees.

I tore the paper, creating voids within the work so that viewers could see the endless trees rising through the openings. This piece was an exploration of the natural verticality found in the woods. As the light shifted throughout the day, shadows transformed the work, continuously altering the dialogue between the piece and its surroundings.

A Site Specific Installation made from torn pieces of works that I’ve been creating and collecting since 2018. Each fragment comes from a different phase of my practice, and this piece was meant to weave them together. Like trees in winter, they remained dormant, waiting for a rebirth and a new purpose. I completed the installation just before spring, drawn to the idea of observing how it would evolve with the changing seasons.
