CLARA MENTE
Warren, Vermont
May 2021

I was awarded with a week long Residency Program at Tiny Birch Residency in Warren VT. I created this piece specifically to be mounted in the Birch forest within the residence premises. I worked outdoors every day, observing the 1000 shades of Vermont Greens. Once the piece was halfway done and I knew where I wanted this site-specific piece to be located, I began the finishing process by hanging the work between two trees. I tore the paper and created voids through the work so that viewers could see the endless trees arising through the ripped paper. This work was meant to explore the natural verticality that happens in the woods. Different times of the day would create different shadows over the work, changing completely the light and conversation between the setting and the piece.

Site Specific Installation made out of torn pieces of works that I’ve been creating and collecting since 2018. I have been through different phases and series and I wanted to find a way to connect them all. Like the trees, during winter they were dormant waiting for a rebirth and purpose. I finished this piece right before Spring and was interested in studying and observing how it would converse with the different seasons.
